Deciphering New Facebook Privacy Settings

This week Facebook unveiled new privacy settings and, at your next log in, you will be asked to update the settings for your profile.  These changes are meant to simplify Facebook’s notoriously confusing privacy settings and will give users greater control over who can see each individual status update or picture.

But not all of the new privacy settings may be a step forward for safeguarding your personal information or reputation on the web. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit who “fights for freedom primarily in the courts”  in cases affecting digital rights, has their own assessment of changes: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  Check it out to learn what these new settings mean for you.

LiveChat Now Available on Facebook

If you are one of the library’s many regular LiveChat users, or if you have been wanting to give it a try, I have good news!  You can now chat with law librarians through the Library’s Facebook page.  Become a fan of the Boston University Pappas Law Library and select the LiveChat tab to talk with a librarian from the comforts of the third floor quiet study room, your apartment, or anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

Need more reasons to become our fan?  From our page you can also search the library catalog, locate electronic journals, and keep up on library events, hours, and other news.

If privacy concerns are holding you back, be aware that the ONLY information we see from our fans’ profiles are your small profile pictures, your networks, and any other information you designate as PUBLIC (what everyone on the Internet can see without being your friend). Whether or not you add us as a friend, you can continue to access LiveChat through our website.
