Boston.com reports on the order handed down by U.S. District Court judge Nancy Gertner against the United States for the wrongful convictions of Peter Limone, Joseph Salvati, Louis Greco and Henry Tameleo. The men were tried in 1968 and remained in prison as late as 2001, when a state judge overturned Limone’s conviction on the basis that the FBI had withheld evidence that he and the other three men had been framed. Joseph Salvati and Louis Greco were represented by BULaw alumni (see related story). The 235 page Memorandum and Order in Limone et al. v. United States, No. 02-cv-10890 (Jul. 26, 2007) is now available on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts website.

Westlaw has recently expanded the use of term frequency searching to case law and secondary source databases. Previously available only in news databases, term frequency searching is now available in approximately 4,700 case law and secondary source databases. As Westlaw noted in its product announcement, term frequency searching “is particularly helpful when you want to restrict your search by topic but few field restrictions are available (such as when you search secondary sources).”
“To use the Term Frequency feature, access one of these databases, type a Terms and Connectors query in the Search text box, then click Term Frequency. A list of your search terms is displayed. Use the Set Frequency drop-down lists to designate the number of times you want one or more terms to be mentioned in any retrieved document (e.g., require the phrase leading question to appear at least five times in any document you retrieve). Click OK to return to the Search page. Then click Search Westlaw to run the search.”
If you have any questions about using term frequency searching in your research, please contact me via email at rlsweet@bu.edu, via phone at 617-353-8853, or in person in Room 332.
