Supreme Court Decides Second Amendment Case

As expected, the Supreme Court released today its decision in District of Columbia et al. v. Heller (No. 07-290). The decision affirms an individual right under the Second Amendment to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia.

SCOTUS: Guantanamo Detainees

The Supreme Court today released its opinion in Boumediene v. Bush, regarding the habeas corpus privileges of Guantanamo detainees.  The opinion of the Court was written by Justice Kennedy and joined in by Justices Breyer, Souter, Ginsburg and Stevens.  Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Alito and Thomas dissented.

A New Scholarly Forum

In a new development some law reviews are posting open access online companions with responses to and debates about their articles.  One of the most interesting is University of Pennsylvania Law Review’s Pennumbra which posts PDF versions of responses with their own volume and page number for easy citation, as well as debates.  They vary in their format but a number of law reviews now have one: Yale Law Review has Pocket Part; Harvard Law Review has Forum; University of Michigan Law Review has First Impressions; Northwestern University Law Review has The Colloquy; Virginia Law Review has In Brief; Lewis & Clark Law School has Environmental Law Online

RA Training Tomorrow: Briefs, Dockets and Other Court Documents

On Wednesday, June 4, at 1 p.m. (room 334), come to a session on resources for locating briefs and other court documents. Coverage will include web sites to monitor pending cases, databases for historical research on the U.S. Supreme Court, and features on Westlaw and Lexis that can make this kind of research much easier.

We will also discuss some other tools for current awareness, and identify some types of materials that may not be available, even with all of the tools at our disposal.
