Library of Congress Guide on Judge Sotomayor

The Law Library of Congress has compiled a guide with links to information about, and writings by, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who was nominated by President Obama this week to the United States Supreme Court. The Library has provided similar guides on other recent Supreme Court nominees.

California Marriage Decision

On May 26, the California Supreme Court rejected a challenge to Proposition 8, leaving intact the bar to same-sex marriage approved by voters in November 2008.

The full text of Strauss v. Horton is available from the Court’s web site. A news release summarizes the separate opinions of the justices.

Ginsburg on Women and the Supreme Court

In an article published in USA Today, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg comments on the need for more women on the Supreme Court:

“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. I don’t say (the split) should be 50-50. … It could be 60% men, 40% women, or the other way around. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”

Lexis Program for Deferred Associates

The LexisNexis ASPIRE (Associates Serving Public Interests Research) program allows qualified graduates to access a specified menu of LexisNexis services at no charge.  To be eligible, you must have accepted an Associate position at a law firm, but 1) are experiencing a deferred fall 2009 start date, and 2) are taking on public interest work during your deferral period. International Tax Policy Reform

In his remarks at the White House yesterday, President Obama announced proposals to close “overseas tax havens” and “restore fairness and balance to our tax code.” A press release from the Treasury Department provides details about the proposals and how they would change current law.
