The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), is the leading reference guide for definition and treatment of various mental disorders recognized in the United States. DSM-4, the 4th edition of the Manual, was published in 1994.
DSM-5 is scheduled for publication in 2013. Preliminary draft revisions to the current diagnostic criteria for psychiatric diagnoses are now available for public review and comment. The DSM-5 site provides a News Release and a frequently asked questions (FAQ), which give an overview of proposed revisions.
Science magazine summarizes the proposed revisions here. Coverage in The New York Times and The Washington Post, on National Public Radio, and on such blogs as Mind Hacks and the Wall Street Journal’s Health Blog, consider the social impact of DSM revisions. CALI lessons are interactive lessons on a variety of law school topics provided through the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction. Each lesson focuses on a specific aspect of the legal topic and contains dozens of practice questions. The next class in the Certificate in Research Skills for Practice Program is Statutory Research in Print. Many lawyers prefer statutory research in print, and with good reason. This class will get you comfortable with statutes, pocket parts, updating pamphlets, indexes and tables and give you the confidence to perform this low-cost legal research with ease.
